For nearly 3o years, GLENN EVANS has been banging on the skins for a little band called NUCLEAR ASSAULT, one of thrash metal’s most socially aware groups.  We got a chance to talk with MR. EVANS about his impressive body of work spanning almost 3 decades, and see what he has been up to lately!

OO: What have you been up to lately?

GE: Just finished a new 4 song EP at Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso, TX that’s due for release June 1, 2014.  It’s a 4 song EP of cover songs…

NUCLEAR ASSAULT: Nuclear Assault is on hold for 2014, I plan on putting the band in the same studio in El Paso to record a new album in 2015 followed by a world tour…

TT QUICK:  I no longer play in TT Quick, but I’m still good friends with Dave and even brought him into Nuke for the album “Something Wicked” back in 93, 94… Dave also did half of the lead guitar word on my second solo album “CIA – Attitude” and offered to play on this new solo EP.

Actually, it just began as an idea to find a great drum room to record the next Nuke album in, and liked the studio so much that I flew home and put a few songs together – flew back to El Paso and recorded 6 songs in 5 days. 2 original and 4 covers.   Playing drums, bass, guitars, vocals, lead, & producing it myself… I decided just to do the covers because it was just an experiment anyway.

Also shot videos for every song in 4K

Nuke hasn’t stopped touring in 29 years… It’s always on & off according to everyone’s schedules… we just did – japan, Puerto rico, brazil, chili, Manitoba, east & west coast of the US, Germany, Holland, and a bunch of other shows in 2013…  We just don’t do 6 months on the road anymore…. a handful of shows here & there is plenty for me…

My new EP “Overload” will be the next release – First will be out on Picture Disc, then LP. then CD, then finally downloads – I’m turning the clock back and going old school… was way more fun

I started a new record label called “Sidipus Records” that’s well under way with major distribution and over 55 releases within 2 years!

OO: You kinda were M.I.A. it seemed for a while and now you are just all over with clinics on YouTube and N.A., and TT Quick.  What brought you back?

GE: I wasn’t really MIA; I was working on the road, developing new state of the art technology with partner / billionaire Roger McNamee of Elevation Partners.  He invested millions into my ideas and i had to deliver the goods… The service is called “Moon Tunes” and is patented as the only company that can broadcast concerts every night via satellite doing 8 camera on-the-fly video productions to iPhones, droids, ipads, pcs. macs, etc. without requiring flash player, and archives the show within minutes on our servers to watch instantly after the show is over…. Over 7 years of hard work, research & development, as well as traveling the world experimenting with our new system.

OO: How do you guys get around the touring schedules for N.A., Accept, and TT Quick?

GE: In between, doing Nuclear Assault runs, i stayed on the road as a video producer / director / developer of new technology.

I left the road doing the satellite broadcasts at the end of 2013 to focus on my own career now that my future is semi-secure and jumped right into the studio December 27th, 2013….. I know a lot of broke musicians at 65 and I don’t want to be one of them…

I’m back to work on Nuclear Assault… I fell far behind in the years I was traveling with Roger McNamee helping him get the new technology off the ground… So I’m making up for it now… Talking to Nuke fans, seeing what’s up… the Nuke FB page went from 17,000 likes to over 100,000 in just a few months because I’m trying to give the fans what they want… Been sending out my old drumsticks to fans also as per their request, but I ran out…

The Nuke Train is rolling once again; I managed the band since day one, and never stopped… Come to think of it, I also got TT Quick signed with Jon Z back in 84…. whatever…

OO: Do you still get nervous before a show or do you get over that after so many years of making music?

GE: As far as getting nervous, I smoke about an ounce of weed every few days… The only thing I get nervous about is running out!  I get butterflies a few minutes before show time, but to me it’s always been a battle… a mission… in the early days you see me dressed in cammo a lot because I approached everything I did with Nuke as a mission.  It was no easy battle either…. getting ripped off from promoters, getting jumped in the parking lot at Lamour’s but turning the tables on THAT asshole hahaha…. kicked his junkie ass all the way back to queens!!!

The point is, it really is a battle on the road with any band… internal problems, financial problems, I even remember Nuke’s first tour bus was a school bus I bought and gutted – bunks in the middle, seats in the front, gear & merch in the back… Engine caught fire once in PA in a blizzard while I was putting oil in the oil spilled on the manifold & caught fire… i had to put it out with my bare hands & continue to drive…. ahhh the good ole days…

not to mention it was 4 in the morning and below zero…

OO: Describe the writing/recording process for you.

GE: As far as recording… there are several ways… I prefer these days to record myself… even on Nuke albums “Handle with Care” & “Out of Order”  I recorded the drum tracks alone without anyone else in the studio…. Most musicians have horrible timing, and for me it’s much easier to hear the song in my head and play my heart out on it without anyone else throwing me off…  The drum tracks are critical on every album, so if you get musicians with bad timing & horrible tons, just makes it that much harder to lay down drum tracks…. Now I developed a habit of doing it that way, and it works well for me.  I’m not saying every drummer show do it this way, it’s just that I’m a very impatient person in the studio and I want it done right – no fucking around…

horrible tones not tons…

I feel more confident as a solo artist now… i don’t have to rely on anyone but myself, which is great…

as far as writing, I’m constantly writing music… my living room is a recording studio that just kind of happened over the past few months… I built a state of the art recording studio in my home in New Jersey in 1990 and sold it in 2002,  but have had studios in my homes since I was 6 years old.  I grew up in the early 60s and was doing overdubbing and studio tricks by just experimenting… but I swore I’d never build another one… but I did…  realizing that the most important components in any studio are the microphones, I bought a few old German Neumann U87s, U149’s, U49’s,  a bunch of 421s and SM57s, and it just kinda of happened…  My drums are mic’ed up, Pro Tools is up & running and I have a new studio.. I have vaulted ceilings in my living room so the drum sound is incredible and makes me want to play them & enjoy playing them… i can write song after song now at the drop of a dime because everything is fired up & running 24/7 – I also live on a 3 acre ranch with no neighbors with a nice 1 acre pond, so I have my own recording paradise so to speak…

I’m truly blessed, but it took 55 years of my life to get this blessed….

OO: I heard that you have a history with Twisted Sister but I haven’t been able to find any documentation online about it.  Can you set the record?

GE: Twisted Sister… hahahaha

That was one big mess…

As far as I can remember, Tony Petri (or however you spell his name) was their drummer on the bar circuit in the tri-state area…

I was drumming for Dreamer at the time …. i went back &forth between Dreamer & TT Quick several times within a few years between 80 & 84… Whoever paid more… hahaha

But, Tony got the boot from Twisted, and I audition for Twisted and got the job – but was still playing with Dreamer 6 nights a week and rehearsing in Long Island 5 days a week with Sister…

It was a real rough time making it work… Tony Petri then joined Dreamer, and I was still rehearsing with Sister… Tony Petri is a gigantic asshole to put it mildly, and it’s no wonder why they tossed him… major, major attitude…asshole…

Anyway, he demanded that he start right away with Dreamer, so I was like “Fine, Fuck You Dick-head”

I continued to rehearse with DEE, but hey were totally drug free and I smoked an ounce of weed a week, so I knew it wasn’t going to work…

About that time, I was transferring my gear to my brother-in-laws truck at 4am for a Sister rehearsal that day… it was January, freezing cold… I pulled a cherry picker off the truck so I could load my drums and forgot they weighed almost 1000 pounds… crushed all my toes on my right foot –

I continued to play every night with Dreamer, 3 sets a night – and sticking my foot in a gigantic pail of ice in between sets…

The next day I was driving that 3 hour drive from south jersey to Long Island to rehearse with Sister, was late, and speeding – got pulled over and got a bunch of tickets…

After that rehearsal I called Dee and told him fuck it – get someone else – they got AJ to replace me… Y

You won’t find any documentation anywhere except for witnesses – Bruce from Dreamer witnessed the phone call I made to Dee from his house telling Dee to find someone else… he said they already had a backup because they couldn’t take any chances… So, I said – fine  – later

So Tony Petri got my job in Dreamer (which i was told was a big laughing stock because he didn’t know the songs and demanded to start right away… i wasn’t going to stand in his way… he was just a plain down right ASSHOLE..

So, I joined back up with Mark in TT Quick, then Mark & Walt changed the lineup and brought in Dave DiPietro – We rehearsed in my studio in my sisters basement in Brick, NJ until we had a demo ready to go – I delivered it to Jon Z and he signed us immediately

‘TT Quick became the big fish in the small pond right behind Sister, who just signed with Atlantic – During the recording of the 2nd TT Quick album, Mark & I had a blowout & I split – It was mutual – we hated each other, even though I saved his punk ass from getting severely kicked by a few assholes – That’s the thanks I got –

Mark is perfect for Accept – we did covers of them for years, and he has that voice that matches UDO – but. Mark, you’re just a hired gun – you’re band TT Quick flopped dude —

Never ever change a formula that works… Besides, there’s already a john Bonham, the world don’t need carbon copy…

I remember Dave saying to me in a dressing room one time – “Robert Plant & Jimmy Page were Led Zeppelin and the other members didn’t matter… so, in other words Dave was saying that the Bass & Drums don’t matter, it’s the guitar player & singer… Well, I completely disagree Dave… That’s like building a house with no solid foundation, or just plain old egotistical bullshit from another ego filled guitarist…

It’s no wonder TT Quick flopped big time…. Nuke on the other hand had Danny Lilker & myself as the most solid foundation possible…

Add in Anthony Bramante on lead that was given a chance to grow with the rest of us, & John Connelly’s vocals & lyrics… John is one of the most brilliant, honest, & sincere people I have ever met…

That’s what became Nuclear Assault

And with that lineup floored TT Quick within months – TT Quick got dropped from Island Records where their second album “Metal of Honor” Flopped and Nuclear Assault’s “Survive” debuted at # 143 on the Billboard charts and sold bucket loads – they couldn’t keep it in stock…

So – Twisted Sister went Bankrupt after Dee took all the publishing royalties… he rode a bicycle to work answering phones while Nuke was playing for 80,000 people… my, my, my, how things seem to work out just right…

TT Quick never did do anything but a few reunions shows… the one coming up in May I was invited to as long as I brought Nuke with me… Nuke’s off 2014 – 2015 is the 3o year anniversary new album & world tour – not before – so that’s a no go – besides, I’ve had my fill of NJ State Troopers for one lifetime…

so to sum it up, I’m 55 years old, healthy, happy, & content with my life. I have everything I want or need… I’m not a materialistic person, but I’m single, live alone, and i do have several bedrooms and rotate during the year to keep from getting bored… Like staying in different hotel rooms in my own home.

Metal Forever!!!

What is the one thing you wanted as a kid and never got that you would still fork out some dough to get?

GE: I want for nothing truly.  The one THING I always wanted is a vintage Pontiac GTO… Black… but, I’m also practical and I’m not a “thing” person, so I’m okay with not having one… so I built a model and saved myself $20,000 ….
