Busted! 100 celebs and their drug busts

Gregg Allman

Part of The Allman Brothers Band with *gasp* his brother Duane. 1976- Arrested on federal drug charges but got out of any penalties by agreeing to testify against a friend/tour manager/bodyguard. This understandably helped the rift in the band grow so Gregg did his own thing and has been sober since the mid-90s.

Louis Armstrong

The puffy cheeked jazz wonder was arrested in 1931 for marijuana possession but the charge was later suspended. Isn’t lung power kind of important in that whole trumpet playing thing? Oh you’re right. I doubt he was inhaling.

Hoyt Axton

The country musician and his wife were both arrested in 1997 at their Montana house when they were found with approximately 500 grams of marijuana in their possession. That’s a little over a pound! His wife’s claim was she was giving Hoyt some marijuana to help ease his stress and pain following a 1995 stroke. Um..how much pain is this man in that they need to possess a pound of weed? They both were fined and their sentences were deferred.

Sebastian Bach

Lead singer for the heavy metal band Skid Row from the late 80s to 1996 (when he was fired), he was well known for his bottle throwing and wearing controversial t-shirts on stage. Not to be confused with Johann S.B. (the classical composer-even though this Bach also had some “what-was-I-thinking-then” hair), the current Bach was arrested in 2002 for two bags(about 5 grams) of marijuana and some rolling papers. I’m stuck on picturing Johann Sebastian Bach stoned out of his gourd trying to compose some trippy music on the piano.

Ol’ Dirty Bastard

First things first. Why advertise what kind of guy you are right in your name? Why not, like, Knight In Shining Armor? And in case anyone else thinks this, it’s down with O.P.P. not O.D.B. Naughty by Nature song. O.D.B. wasn’t involved. Moving on. This guy has a long rap(haha, get it, he raps) sheet of drug charges like in 1999 when he got arrested for some traffic violations and having crack cocaine and shortly there after for having 20 vials of crack and some marijuana. Oh, and in case this is on Jeopardy, he was the first person arrested for being a convicted felon wearing a bulletproof vest under a new California law. I guess once you’re a convicted felon, your chest is open territory for bullets. 2000-he escaped from his court-mandated drug treatment facility and spent one month as a fugitive. He ended up dying in 2004 from an accidental drug overdose.

Bo Bice

The long haired American Idol runner up lived up to the stereotype his tresses implied by getting arrested for marijuana possession, drug paraphernalia, and public intoxication in 2003. He stayed out of jail by agreeing to enter a drug program. A haircut should be step 1. Just two years earlier, he had been arrested for scoring cocaine in a strip club. Another stereotype. So what now Bo? Hit us with another stereotype.

Notorious B.I.G.

Tidbit I didn’t know until today: I believe the B.I.G. stands for “business instead of games.” Maybe I’m just out of the loop on that one and it’s old news but just in case you were in the dark like me, there you go. 1991-before fame hit- arrested for dealing cocaine and spent 9 months in jail waiting to make bail. 1996- arrested for having 50 grams of marijuana and four automatic weapons. Arrested again in the same year for being caught smoking weed in a car. Sadly, the rapper’s life was taken in 1997 before some of charges against him could be resolved.

David Bowie

The singer with the ever-changing persona was arrested in 1976 for marijuana possession and had about half a pound on him. The maximum sentence he would have received was 15 years but the charges were later dropped and Bowie continued doing his thing. Good thing since his heavy cocaine use through the years brought out quite an interesting side of the artist. Ziggy Stardust anyone?

Aaron Carter

Every time I hear this kid’s name I think two things: Lindsay Lohan/Hilary Duff love triangle and that stupid “Aaron’s Party(Come Get it)” crap of a song that gets stuck in my head. 2008-February- he was pulled over for speeding and less than 2 ounces of marijuana were found in the car. Does anyone else remember that show House of Carters? I think I would need more than 2 ounces to deal with that family!

Ray Charles

The legendary musician was arrested in 1958 and 1961 for heroin possession and in 1964 was arrested for heroin and marijuana possession at the Boston airport. 1965-arrested for heroin possession after being addicted for almost 20 years. He avoided jail by getting clean at a clinic in Los Angeles and spent a year on parole.

Adam Clayton

The lesser known bassist of the band U2, Clayton was arrested in 1989 while in Dublin for carrying a small amount of marijuana but got out of conviction by making a large donation to charity.

Joe Cocker

With his gritty voice and interesting moves on stage, Cocker is an icon of his time. His style is quite unique and John Belushi used to do a close to perfect imitation of him on “Saturday Night Live.” In 1972, Cocker and six of his entourage were arrested for marijuana possession in Australia and kindly asked to leave the country. This caused an uproar with the Aussie Cocker fans and sparked much debate over the topic of the legalization of marijuana. As far as I know, Australia is still weed-free but good job Joe Cocker in almost causing it to be legal.

Coolio

The rapper, known by most people by his crazy hair, was arrested in 1998 for marijuana possession but those charges were dropped. Guess he’s living a gangsta’s paradise.

David Crosby

The Crosby, Stills and Nash singer (I wonder what the story is behind that band name) had a lot of problems with drug addiction in the 70s and 80s. He was arrested multiple times on various drug charges and shortly thereafter was arrested again for possessing heroin, cocaine, pot and codeine — while on bail awaiting cocaine charges. Walking away from rehab was the last straw and he was ordered to Texas State Prison in Huntsville where he stayed for 9 months. 2004- arrested for having a loaded .45-caliber handgun and a small quantity of marijuana.

Trick Daddy

The rapper was involved in a string of incidents like picking up a drug possession charge in 2003 while at a high school football game. I’m sure those high school students sell it cheaper but come on now. He was looking at a long time in the slammer but managed to get out of it by agreeing to do a series of lectures that would educate kids about the danger of drugs. No word as if the series hit the same school where he was arrested.

D’Angelo

2005-arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and driving while intoxicated. He plead guilty and lost some money and his driver’s license out of the ordeal.

Neil Diamond

1976- a raid on the singer’s house produced less than an ounce of marijuana. the arrest was expunged from his record when Diamond agreed to attend a six-month drug aversion program. “OK class. Pick up your “pot” -which we all know is really oregano- and let’s roll up our doobies. See, that wasn’t as exciting was it. Let’s not do the real thing either. Class dismissed.”

Snoop Dogg

The guy sings about drugs enough so it’s no surprise it carries over to his own life. 2006- arrested for parking a loading zone and found in possession of marijuana and a firearm. He was released on a $35,000 bond. He was arrested again a few months later for the same two things in his possession after performing on the “Tonight Show.” Better stick to the gin and juice man.

Donovan

What a great claim to fame. In 1966, he became the first high-profile British pop star to be arrested for possession of marijuana and was refused entry into the U.S. until late 1967 because of it.

Faith Evans

2004- found marijuana and cocaine during a traffic stop and her and her husband were arrested. She completed a 13-week drug rehab program to have charges dropped.

Freddy Fender

Musician. 1960- he and a band member arrested for marijuana possession and he spent almost three years in the scary Louisiana State Penitentiary Angola prison farm until he was helped out by the Governor Jimmie Davis. Davis was also a songwriter and musician and requested that Fender stay away from music while on probation as a condition of his release. Aren’t the best songs written in those hard times in life? He gets released from a scary 3 years in jail and can’t sing about it. That governor was a jerk.

Flavor Flav

Flav was big into drugs, specifically crack, and had his license suspended at least 43 times! During a fight with his baby mama, he got picked and charged with possession of narcotics. He tried rehab a bunch of times (maybe he could have told Lindsay Lohan that rehab is for quitters and doesn’t work anyways) and racked up some more drug arrests like one in 1996. Supposedly, he is clean as of 2004 but I wish drugs could explain his crazy behavior on “Flavor of Love 192.” “yeeeeah booooyyyyee”

Jerry Garcia

The Grateful Dead singer was raided/busted many times during the 60s, 70s and 80s and finally went to rehab after the band staged an intervention in the mid 80s. The band and crew members were arrested multiple times for drug possession over the years.

Art Garfunkel

Musician of Simon and Garfunkel. You can’t have a boring life with such a such last name. Arrested in early 2004 and again in August 2005 and paid fines both times.

George Harrison

Don’t worry all the Beatles made the list. This Beatle was arrested along with his soon-to-be wife on his wedding day in 1969 on marijuana possession charges. No word as to whether or not the arresting officers made it into the wedding album.

Don Henley

The Eagles singer was arrested in 1980 and charged with possession of marijuana, cocaine and Quaaludes, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He was fined, put on two years’ probation and ordered to attend drug counseling.

Whitney Houston

2000-marijuana was found in her and her husband, Bobby Brown’s bag at an airport in Hawaii. The couple left before the authorities got there. She pleaded no contest and had to pay a few thousand dollars to a youth-orientated anti-drug program in place of community service. She also went to rehab in 2004 and 2005.

Jadakiss

2004, 2006- marijuana possession that resulted in fines

Mick Jagger

The “Rolling Stone” was arrested in 1967 and 1970 for marijuana possession but neither resulted in jail time. Just a side note: these guys have gone on tour 40 times since 1963!

Suge Knight

The former CEO of Death Row Records has had many run-ins with the police which has resulted in multiple prison sentences. Most of the charges were related to violence like the one where he was caught on camera in Las Vegas fighting a guy who supposedly went on to shoot and kill Tupac Shakur. Because it was a probation violation, Knight was sentenced to 9 years in prison. He went back to jail for violence in 2002 and 2003. In 2005, he was pulled over for making an illegal u-turn and was found in possession of marijuana. He was released shortly thereafter.

Queen Latifah

1996-arrested for possession of a small amount of marijuana and a loaded hand gun. The result was a fine and two year’s probabtion.

John Lennon

1968- arrested with his wife Yoko Ono for marijuana possession. The charge nearly cost him the right to live in the U.S.

Method Man

2007- When pulled over for a traffic stop, smoke poured out of his rolled down window. He had two blunts and a bag of marijuana in plain sight, which he later tried to make up for by doing several public service announcements. Must be nice. I’m pretty very few “regular” folk could get away with doing public service announcements to make up for having marijuana. It should be on the list though I think. Would you like a fine, jail time, community service or a starring role in a public service announcement?

Bob Marley

Man, I was surprised when I saw his name on the list. No, not really. Although he did only get arrested once in 1977 for marijuana possession so he must have hid it in his drugs after that.

Linda McCartney

Paul McCartney’s missus was arrested in 1975 for marijuana possession but charges were later dropped. In 1984, her and Paul were arrested in Barbados for having marijuana and were fined $100 each. They flew to the Heathrow Airport and she was arrested again for possession. She later said that hard drugs were disgusting but marijuana is “pretty lightweight.”

Paul McCartney

1980- Arrested going through customs in Japan when 7.7 ounces of marijuana was found in his luggage. He had previously been denied a visa to the country after two convictions of drug possession in Europe and if he had been tried and convicted, he would have spent 7 years in prison. He was released and deported after 10 days in jail and told he wouldn’t be welcome in the country again. He played a concert there 10 years later so I guess they changed their minds.

George Michael

February 2006- arrested for marijuana possession and was cautioned by the police before being released. October 2006- arrested when found semi-conscious in his car and in the possession of marijuana. He was released on bail and pled guilty to driving under the influence of drugs. He was banned from driving for two years and had to do community service.

Mystikal

1998-Felony weapons charge and a misdemeanor drug possession charge. Real fun came in 2004 when he was sentenced to six years in prison after entering a guilty plea for forcing his hairstylist to perform sex acts. He also admitted to extortion. I guess the only question that comes to my mind is is it really necessary for him to have a hairstylist?

Willie Nelson

2006-Arrested and released for 1.5 pounds of pot and a bag of mushrooms found at a traffic stop. He entered a guilty plea and was fined $1,024 and placed on probation for six months. The long-haired crooner has always been outspoken in his stance for the legalization of marijuana.

Iggy Pop

The singer for “The Stooges” was arrested in 1976 for marijuana possession.

David Lee Roth

The singer who rocked the spandex while rocking out with Van Halen was arrested in 1993 in New York City’s Washington Square Park for buying pot from an undercover police officer. He later described his purchase as “$10 worth of Jamaican, bunk reefer maan” and became a punchline for late-night television.

Ja Rule

2004- arrested for marijuana possession during a traffic stop, charges were dropped.

Carlos Santana

1991- The Grammy award winning guitar player was arrested at Houston Airport for transporting 5 grams of marijuana from Mexico.

Bon Scott

The lead singer for AC/DC was on of the first Australian rockers to be charged with possession of marijuana in the late 60s.

Peter Tork

A member of the band the Monkees, Tork struggled with drugs and alcohol and it led to his arrest and incarceration for several months in the early 70s.

Dionne Warwick

The singer was held at the Miami International Airport in 2002 after a case containing 11 marijuana cigarettes was found in her carry on bag. Warwich was unsure how the marijuana got in her bag (listen to those annoying announcements at the airport and watch your luggage Dionne!) and the charges were dropped when she agreed to perform a series of public service announcements regarding illegal drugs.

Amy Winehouse

2007- The year’s best trainwreck was arrested with her husband in Norway for marijuana possession and were released after paying a fine of 3850 kroner(around $800). She was supposedly “duped” into confessing but fluent English speakers handled the confession so it’s hard to say what she’s referring to. Winehouse was denied a U.S. visa because of “use and abuse of narcotics”, but was later issued one. Let’s leave her across the pond. She’s disturbing enough peace over there.
