TWISTED SISTER’s ‘Blissfully Retired’ Guitarist JAY JAY FRENCH Has ‘No Desire’ To Play Again

TWISTED SISTER guitarist Jay Jay French says that he is "blissfully retired" from playing music, more than two years after the band completed its farewell tour. In 2016, TWISTED SISTER embarked on one final trek, titled "Forty And Fuck It", in celebration of its 40th anniversary. These shows featured the band's "core lineup" of Jay Jay French, singer Dee Snider, guitarist Eddie Ojeda and bassist Mark …

Sure Know Something – Kiss

I love that unplugged!

Steve For The Deaf

In a twist befitting the most Halloween-y of plots, the ultimate Kiss cover version for Halloween 2017 is a version of Kiss doing Kiss.

In 1996 Kiss and many of their fans considered the disco era a bit of an unmentionably uncool blip in a hard rock history that went from proto-metal in NYC in the 70’s to Stadium rock titans 30 years later.

Everything from the debut album up to Rock and Roll Over was fair game. So too was Lick It Up onwards. The forbidden zone in the middle there was roundly ignored by all but the bands detractors.

Then fans started asking for I Was Made For Loving You to be slipped back into the live set. There was a resurgence in interest for Is That You and Torpedo Girl. These songs took on a retro cool the mid 90’s were all about. If we could get…

This is All – Screamin’ Jay Hawkins

Great post!

Steve For The Deaf

After the marvellous Barrence showed us about keeping the flame alight yesterday it seems only fitting to go right the way back to a true original. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins put one of the first shovels in the dirt when it came to building Rock and Roll from the ground up. He’s a blues man with a weapon of mass destruction in his voice.

When you hear Screamin’ Jay actually scream. Well, hold on tight. This guy is a force of nature. He’ll get the hairs on your arm paying attention before your ears have caught up with what that noise is or where it’s coming from.

Hawkins has been credited for his influence on official charters when it comes to his most famous single I Put A Spell On You. There’s a copy in the library of congress and the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame have recognised it as…

Bonus Book Review: “Rock Critic Law: 101 Unbreakable Rules for Writing Badly About Music” by Michael Azerrad

Great post!

Beatles-Freak's Reviews

Rock Critic Law Michael AzerradRock Critic Law: 101 Unbreakable Rules for Writing Badly About Music by Michael Azerrad is another book I got from Harper-Collins over three months ago. The copy I got is an unedited proof and according to the letter I got with it, this book won’t be released until October 18, 2018 (Amazon says the release date is December 15th). I’m not sure why they sent it out so early. I wrote to them in May and asked if it was okay to post a review, but they said they would prefer if I hold off until the month before publication (it is available for pre-order on Amazon). And so, this book has remained on the end table in my living room collecting dust for months and at this point, I just need to move it to the bookshelf. I’m going to defend this early review by saying that this…

Dee Snider – ‘For the Love of Metal’ – Album Review

Dee Snider’s follow-up to his last solo album, ‘We Are the Ones’, was completely unexpected as Dee was done with making albums.  That was until he was challenged to do a contemporary Metal record by Jamey Jasta, leader singer of the metal band Hatebreed.

And there were some serious metal musicians on board with this album, just look at the contributors…

  • Jamey Jasta – Hatebreed
  • Howard Jones – Killswitch Engage
  • Mark Morton – Lamb of God
  • Alissa White-Gluz – Arch Enemy
  • Joel Grind – Toxic Holocaust
  • Nick Bellmore – Toxic Holocaust
  • Charlie Bellmore – Kingdom of Sorrow

I like some metal music, but I am not really familiar with any of these bands, so I was a little apprehensive at first.  These are all modern metal artists and I am stuck in the past.  Plus, Dee only contributed vocals.  He did not write any of the songs.  That alone made…

Twilight Zone – Iron Maiden

Steve For The Deaf

Early Maiden has a real vitality. They were such a lively band on those first couple of records. Paul could sing pretty damned well for this kind of thing. He fires out lyrics with a sneer and yet has an impressive voice all his own. Steve ‘Arris was recruiting only the Killers that East London’s metal scene had to offer as he dreamed his Infinite Dreams. Clive Burr could play with a real swing on that huge metal band drum kit, kind of similar to Bill Ward or Peter Criss’ input in their respective bands in the way that he contributed to the architecture of Maiden’s sound.

Of course after those first two albums the sound of the band would change forever with the arrival of a new front man, the Prodigal Son himself Bruce Bruce. With their new singer a Revelation they took a big leap in theatrics…
